Description
Practical 20mm Screened Topsoil in Bulk Bags
Our 20mm screened topsoil is a dependable general-purpose option for larger garden and landscaping projects. The material is screened to remove oversized debris while retaining a slightly more open texture than our 10mm grade. It is suitable for raising levels, filling beds and borders, preparing planting areas and forming a sound base beneath new lawns.
Each bulk bag contains approximately 850kg, although natural variation in moisture content can cause the weight to vary slightly. As a guide, one bulk bag can cover around 30 square metres at a depth of approximately one inch. Coverage will change according to the depth applied, the condition of the ground and how firmly the material settles.
Ideal for
- General garden landscaping and renovation
- Raising or correcting uneven ground levels
- Filling beds, borders and larger planting areas
- Preparing ground before turfing or grass seeding
- Combining with compost where more organic matter is needed
Using 20mm screened topsoil
Clear the area of weeds, rubble and unwanted material before spreading the soil. Apply it evenly and cultivate it into the existing surface where appropriate, rather than leaving a sharp boundary between soil layers. For turf preparation, rake the surface level, lightly firm it underfoot and rake again so that the finished ground is even but not compacted.
Topsoil is a natural product, so colour, texture and moisture may vary between loads. The most suitable depth depends on whether you are topping up an existing area, creating a planting bed or replacing unsuitable ground. Measure the project carefully and include a small allowance for settlement and shaping. Our soil calculator can help estimate the number of bulk bags required.
20mm topsoil for larger landscaping projects
The 20mm grade is a cost-effective choice when covering larger areas or building up usable garden levels. Screening improves consistency compared with unscreened material while preserving a robust texture for general landscaping. It is commonly selected by homeowners, gardeners and landscaping contractors who need bulk topsoil for lawn bases, planting schemes, garden renovations and site finishing.
For beds and borders, incorporate the topsoil into the existing ground where possible and improve it with compost according to the needs of the proposed planting. For lawns, allow sufficient depth for healthy rooting and avoid laying turf directly onto compacted subsoil or rubble. Drainage issues should be corrected before fresh soil is applied, as topsoil alone will not resolve a poorly draining site.
Choosing between 10mm and 20mm screened soil
Both grades are screened and suitable for garden use. Choose 10mm screened topsoil where a finer, more easily raked finish is important, particularly beneath turf or around detailed planting. Choose 20mm topsoil where the project involves general filling, raising levels or improving a broad area and a slightly more open texture is acceptable.
Plan how the bag will be moved from the kerbside delivery point to the working area before ordering. A full bulk bag is heavy and cannot be moved by hand as a single unit. Read the kerbside delivery guidance, check vehicle access and make sure any hired labour is arranged after the goods have arrived and been inspected. If the required depth or grade is unclear, contact TurfWorld with the project measurements and intended use for practical advice.
