Description
Emerald Grass Seed for New Lawns and Repairs
Emerald Grass Seed is a hard-wearing lawn mixture selected for reliable establishment, dense coverage and an attractive green finish. The 1kg bag is a practical size for smaller new lawns, repairing worn areas and overseeding an existing lawn that has become thin or patchy. It is suitable for domestic gardens, landscaped areas and lawns that need to cope with regular use.
Under suitable conditions, germination normally begins within approximately 7 to 14 days. Soil temperature, moisture, preparation and seasonal weather all affect the speed and uniformity of growth, so the seedbed must be kept consistently moist while seedlings establish.
Application guidance
- New lawns: apply approximately 30g per square metre
- Overseeding: apply approximately 25g per square metre
- Best soil temperature: approximately 10°C to 18°C
- Suitable for full sun and areas of partial shade
- Ideal for lawn establishment, repair and improving density
Sowing for even coverage
Remove weeds, stones and debris, then rake the soil to create a fine, level seedbed. Divide the seed into two equal portions and spread one portion lengthways and the other across the area for more even coverage. Lightly rake the seed into the surface, gently firm the ground and water using a fine spray so the seed is not displaced.
Continue watering as required to prevent the surface drying out. Keep people and pets off the area until the new grass is established, and make the first cut only when the seedlings are well rooted and tall enough to trim without pulling. For an existing lawn, mow closely, scarify if required and ensure the seed reaches the soil rather than sitting on surface thatch. Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry place.
How much grass seed does a 1kg bag cover?
At the recommended rate of approximately 30g per square metre, a 1kg bag can cover around 33 square metres of prepared soil for a new lawn. At an overseeding rate of approximately 25g per square metre, it can treat around 40 square metres. These figures are guides; allow for the shape of the area, sowing method and any sections that may require additional attention.
Do not compensate for poor preparation by applying excessive seed. Even distribution, good soil contact and reliable watering are more important than sowing too heavily. A dense application can create unnecessary competition between seedlings and does not correct compacted, waterlogged or nutrient-poor ground.
Caring for newly germinated grass
Use a sprinkler or fine hose spray to keep the seedbed moist without washing seed into piles. As the roots develop, gradually move towards less frequent, deeper watering. Wait until the grass reaches a suitable mowing height before its first cut, use a sharp mower blade and remove only a small proportion of the leaf. Regular mowing will encourage the young lawn to thicken.
Grass seed offers a flexible and economical way to establish or repair a lawn, but it takes longer to create a finished surface than fresh turf. Choose seed when you can protect the area during germination and establishment. If an immediate lawn is required, compare our fresh Signature Turf.
