The first cut & ongoing mowing

Mowing your new lawn

The first few cuts help young turf thicken and establish, but mowing too soon or too short can stress and scalp the new lawn.

Step 01

How to mow new turf correctly

New turf normally becomes ready for its first cut around 10–14 days after laying, but growth, weather and season all affect the timing. Test that the roots have anchored before mowing.

  1. Gently lift a corner. If the turf resists and feels rooted into the soil, it is usually ready for mowing.
  2. Set the mower to its highest cutting height for the first mow to avoid stressing or scalping the grass.
  3. Use a grass box to remove clippings while the turf is still establishing.
  4. Never remove more than one-third of the grass-leaf height in a single cut.
  5. Mow little and often rather than allowing the grass to grow very long before cutting it short.
  6. Keep mower blades sharp. Blunt blades tear the grass and can leave brown, damaged tips.

Step 02

Seasonal mowing frequency

Growth determines frequency. An established lawn may need mowing twice a week during strong spring growth and approximately weekly in summer. Growth slows substantially in winter, so only mow when conditions are suitable and the grass is actively growing.
